Indian bank credit expanded 17.65% year-on-year as of late May, its quickest pace in almost two years, outstripping deposit growth of 12.21% and widening the credit-deposit gap, according to Reserve Bank of India data.
Bank lending in India accelerated to its fastest pace in nearly two years, with outstanding credit rising 17.65% year-on-year as of May 31, 2026, according to Reserve Bank of India data. Total bank credit reached about Rs 215.15 trillion, up from Rs 182.87 trillion a year earlier, reflecting strong momentum across the banking system. Deposits grew more slowly, at 12.21%, to roughly Rs 260.02 trillion, widening the gap between credit and deposit growth to about 544 basis points and reviving a long-running debate over how banks fund rapid loan expansion. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said the slower pace of deposit growth does not constrain lending, as banks hold sufficient capital to support credit. Underlying the trend is a structural shift in household savings: RBI figures show the share of low-cost savings deposits falling from 34.6% in March 2022 to 28.7% in March 2026, while higher-yielding term deposits rose from 55.2% to 61.6%, driven by interest-rate differentials. Bankers have framed the sector's role as central to India's long-term growth ambitions, pointing to investments in technology, digital infrastructure and financial inclusion.
Key Points
- 1Indian bank credit rose 17.65% year-on-year as of May 31, 2026.
- 2Deposits grew 12.21%, widening the credit-deposit gap to about 544 basis points.
- 3Outstanding credit reached roughly Rs 215.15 trillion.
- 4Savings deposits have fallen as a share of the total while term deposits have risen.
Why This Matters
Strong credit growth signals robust demand for loans and economic activity, but a persistent gap over deposits raises questions about how sustainably banks can keep funding expansion.
